At\u00e9 recentemente, pensava-se que eram sobreviventes de uma ra\u00e7a moribunda que at\u00e9 j\u00e1 havia perdido sua l\u00edngua, a uroquilla. Hoje se sabe que o termo uro n\u00e3o designa uma etnia, que <strong>os Uros n\u00e3o tinham l\u00edngua pr\u00f3pria<\/strong> &#8211; alguns sup\u00f5em que a maioria <strong>falava puquina<\/strong>, pois seriam descendentes dos antigos colonos, deslocados pelos aimar\u00e1s &#8211; e que eles tamb\u00e9m n\u00e3o s\u00e3o t\u00e3o velhos, como se acreditava.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c9 poss\u00edvel que o nome tivesse um significado diferente antes da chegada dos espanh\u00f3is, mas no s\u00e9culo 16, quando era usado abundantemente em documentos coloniais, serviu para designar os habitantes mais pobres do <strong>Collao<\/strong>, aqueles de exist\u00eancia t\u00e3o prec\u00e1ria que eles n\u00e3o era poss\u00edvel que se exigisse deles a mesma homenagem que os \u00edndios comuns, os aimar\u00e1s. Uro, ent\u00e3o, ao contr\u00e1rio do aimar\u00e1, referia-se a uma condi\u00e7\u00e3o socioecon\u00f4mica, sem olhar para o local de resid\u00eancia &#8211; <strong>os pescadores mais pobres da costa de Arica eram chamados de uros<\/strong> -, a l\u00edngua que falavam &#8211; <strong>qu\u00edchua, aimar\u00e1 ou puquina<\/strong> &#8211; ou sua proced\u00eancia. Como normalmente os mais poderosos, aqueles que n\u00e3o tinham terra, iam morar entre os arbustos do lago, esses eram os Uros por excel\u00eancia, e a palavra acabou designando-os exclusivamente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A lenda dizia que verdadeiros auroques tinham sangue negro<\/strong>, ent\u00e3o n\u00e3o podiam se afogar ou sentir frio. Na verdade, como a maioria dos \u00edndios de Collao, eles apresentam no sangue uma quantidade maior de hemoglobina e gl\u00f3bulos vermelhos do que os habitantes de outras regi\u00f5es, algo necess\u00e1rio para enfrentar a falta de oxig\u00eanio nas alturas, <strong>que empresta \u00e0 sua pele um colora\u00e7\u00e3o marrom arroxeada<\/strong>, car\u00e1ter ainda n\u00e3o totalmente fixado pela hereditariedade, pois quando descem ao litoral sua pele \u201cclareia\u201d um pouco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Os hoje chamados Uros &#8211; <strong>estima-se que restam apenas cerca de 200 fam\u00edlias<\/strong> &#8211; habitam cerca de <strong>quarenta ilhas flutuantes que s\u00e3o, na verdade, recifes de junco ancorados no fundo raso do lago<\/strong> pelas ra\u00edzes da planta. Dedicam-se \u00e0 pesca, a uma agricultura incipiente nas suas ilhas e, cada vez mais, a atender e vender artesanato aos muitos turistas que as visitam.
